A farmer from Jurguridi Village |
The farmers from Jurguridi Village in Purulia district are happy these days. The reason being they have achieved a 30-40% increase in yield in cucumber cultivation this year. With a perennial water source of River Beko in the vicinity, this remote village was selected in the year 2014 for a Check Dam to tap the river water for irrigation. To bring a sustainable approach to the beneficiaries, the project encourages participatory approach as a result of which 20 farmers join hands to do cucumber cultivation in a cluster covering 20 Bighas (6.6 acre/2.64 Ha) of land. Cluster approach brings competitiveness as well as innovations apart from addressing common challenges.
The main driving force behind this participatory approach are the Purulia district project staff who vowed to leave no stone unturned to motivate the farmers, convince them and finally guided them to adopt recommended technologies. Under ASS activities of WBADMIP, the farmers are exposed to various technologies for adoptions that enhances their productions and the farmers who adopts these technologies during the upcoming seasons are termed as "adopters". Farmers of Juguridi village gave an overwhelming response towards adoption of recommended technologies such as seed treatment, use of recommended dose of fertilisers etc. which not only fetched them a better yield but also reduced their expenses on plant protection.
The average per bigha input cost for the farmers were as follows:
Thus, Cost of cultivation per Hectare= INR 100050( 1 Ha= 7.5 bigha)
For 2.64 Ha = INR 264132
The production from the land of each individual farmer was duly noted down. Farmer's hardwork finally began to pay dividends as their cucumber cultivation gave an average yield of 35 quintals/bigha (1 Bigha=0.33 acre or 0.13 Ha) against 25-26 quintals per bigha they used to get earlier. The cucumbers were sold in the market at the rate of INR 1000/quintal thus bringing a net return of INR 428,868 to the farmers in the 20 bighas or 2.64 Ha area of land with a Cost Benefit ratio of 1:38. The profit was shared among the farmers as per the production from their cultivated land. The farmers are in upbeat mood now and are looking forward for the kharif season.
Interventions from the project has brought a paradigm shift in the attitude towards agriculture among the Jurguridi residents. Cluster based agriculture can address the problem of low farm growth rate and low levels of farm income, as such the project officials are encouraging the beneficiaries to adopt cluster based approach through its community based institutional development programmes.
