Using Discarded Plastic Bottles for low cost Drip Irrigation by Tribal Farmers from Murshidabad District


                Assured irrigation is one of the biggest challenge in rainfed agriculture and in a state like Bengal with almost 2 Million Ha single cropped rainfed areas,  monsoon failure means a huge drop in production. Majority of the farmers are small and marginal with very limited  source of livelihood as such drop in agriculture production directly hit the local socioeconomy. 

West Bengal Accelerated Development of Minor Irrigation Project( WBADMIP) has targeted to transform 75000 ha of such single cropped rainfed areas into multi cropped irrigated areas through assured irrigation by creating demand driven Minor Irrigation structures (Surface and Ground Water). Since its inception in the year 2012, the project has irrigated 68000 ha so far bringing incremental benefits to more than 100000 farm families represented by over 2000 Water User Associations.

One of the biggest challenge with Surface Water Minor Irrigation scheme is the comparatively low irrigation potential compared to GW schemes due to water loss through evaporation and seepage. As such it becomes more crucial for the Water User Associations to adopt various water conservation methods for availability of water during the dry Rabi season. Drip irrigation is one efficient method in which water is delivered in drops to the soil surface instead of the traditional method of flowing through channel thus enabling the root zone to be wet enough for the plants to uptake for physiological function. However for small and marginal farmers, affording commercial drip irrigation system without public investment is still a big challenge.

 Demonstrating a fine example of adopting innovations and environmental accountability, the tribal farmers from Aruliadanga Water User Association in Murshidabad district are using discarded plastic bottles to transform them into low cost drip system for irrigation. Internet is becoming a powerful medium in the cross border transfer of affordable technologies and the farmers from Aruliadanga spent no time in adopting this low cost eco-friendly technology when they first saw in YouTube. The young saplings in the recently established Mix Fruit Orchard needs regular supply of water  during the initial years for survival. The low cost drip system  has ensured the regular supply of water required without putting much pressure on the Surface Water Scheme( Water Detention Structure) that was created under the project to cater the irrigation requirement for agriculture activities in these rainfed areas.

       Plastic is considered to be one of the biggest toxic pollutants that is adversely affecting our land and rivers. Infact, Plastic has toxic chemicals which can cause several health hazards upon coming in contact with human. In rural areas besides causing water logging, plastic also effects the crop growth by hindering the process of photosynthesis.

                In developing nation like India, solid waste management is more prominent in the urban areas whereas in the  rural areas it is yet to gear up the momentum. Since plastic is non biodegradable, besides reducing its usage, one of the most effective way  to deal with plastic pollution is to reuse and recycle.

Marigold Cultivation in Murshidabad


             

With the majority of the farmers in West Bengal experiencing low return from the Paddy cycle, WUA members from Mirzapur (East) Water User Association under Raghunathganj Block of Murshidabad district have taken to marigold cultivation and scripted their own success story. They have not only harvested a good profit but also could inspire other farmers to take up this profitable cultivation in the future.

The marigold cultivation came about when these farmers were looking for some remunerative crop to make use of a plot of land remaining fallow for some time near a Mango Orchard just within the command area.

The farmers approached the DPMU experts who suggested them to go for marigold cultivation.
After a hand holding support from the DPMU Murshidabad team, a demonstration centre for marigold cultivation was established . Marigold Flowers are picked once in 3 days beginning from 60 days after planting and they take 130-150 days in total from sowing to final harvesting.


The Marigold cultivation not only gave a good net profit but also reduced the water requirement to less than half. Economy of return from the 2 crops as reported by the farmers is given below:

Marigold is a year round crop with three cropping cycle i.e Late Rains (Mid July), winter (Mid October) and summer (Feb-March). Farmers of Mirzapur (East) WUA demonstrated that if Marigold is cultivated in Bengal during the late rain cropping cycle, it can fetch a premium price during the Puja festivals.

Crop Diversification through Pulses and Oilseeds as an alternative to Summerfallowing- A success Story from Murshidabad District


      Summer fallow is a cultivated plot of land where the agricultural activities are put on halt for a regular growing season(Pre-Kharif). Resting the ground in this manner allows one crop to be grown using the moisture and nutrients of more than one nutrient cycle. However, it also creates lost production opportunity. Recent studies have revealed that summerfallowing can result in serious environmental consequences. This is due to the requirement of additional fuels at the time tillage operation when the land remains fallow. Also, organic matter can be depleted with higher frequency of fallowing.
     There are two classic case from Murshidabad DPMU which demonstrates that diversifying cropping system with Green Gram and Sesame brings an additional income to the farmers which is lost if the soil remain fallow during Pre Kharif. This comes as a bonus to the enhancement of soil moisture conservation, improving soil nitrogen availability and increasing crop production.

Case Study 1: Green Gram(Vigna radiata) Cultivation in Pasai I Tube Well Water User Association under Raghunathganj I Block:
   Green Gram is mostly sown as rainfed kharif crop. In the Rabi and Pre-Kharif season, the crop requires 2-4 irrigation for good yield. A pre-sowing irrigation is generally found to be beneficial. 

Five nos. of Farmers from the WUA cultivated Green Gram during Pre-Kharif 2017 covering 5 bigha plot of land details of which is as follows:

Case Study 2. Sesame(Sesamum indicum) cultivation in Dakshinpara Tube Well Water User Association under Raghunathganj I Block of the district.
 Like legume grains, sesame also is efficient in water use and hence require less water for their growth. Irrigation at 50% available moisture level is found to give a good yield. Flowering and fruiting stages are observed to be most responsive to irrigation.


Five nos. of Farmers from the WUA cultivated sesame during Pre-Kharif 2017 covering 5 bigha plot of land details of which is as follows:

The above 2 case studies demonstrate that besides improving the soil health, the farmer are also earning additional income during the lean period of the year when there used to be no agricultural activities earlier. This also increases the actual crop cultivated area thus adding to the overall cropping intensity of the command area.
